At the time, it was known as the road's most famous product, as it was popular as a souvenir to take home to travelers along the Tokaido road. It is a traditional Japanese craft that is depicted in various ways in ukiyo-e prints by Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, and others.
